Description

Motac teams up with Merck (Merck Millipore) to provide access to the SMCxPRO™ ultra-sensitive immunoassay platform. This assay detects trace levels of established disease biomarkers, capturing concentrations down to the femtogram/mL level, and as a result, monitors small changes in protein concentrations to accurately measure biomarkers associated with neurodegenerative diseases’ progression. In addition, the small sample volume requirements allow you to conserve valuable samples, reduce program costs and improve productivity. This affordable solution allows academic research labs, biotech and pharmaceutical companies to access reliable protein detection and expand the quest for drug discovery and development.

Method

The SMCxPRO™ (Single Molecule Counting) platform is an ultra-sensitive immunoassay technology designed to quantify trace levels of proteins and biomarkers in biological samples. Unlike conventional ELISAs, SMCxPRO™ isolates and counts individual immunocomplexes, allowing femtogram-per-milliliter sensitivity. The method relies on bead-based capture of target molecules, followed by fluorescent labeling and digital counting of each tagged complex, ensuring high specificity and a wide dynamic range.

Technology applies to plasma, serum, cerebrospinal fluid as well as tissue extracts from patients and animal models of diseases.

Endpoints

The available kits for the SMCxPRO™ Platform are continuously expanding. There are neuroscience-dedicated as well as oncology-dedicated kits. Customised kits can be developed by our partner, Merck.

In Parkinson’s disease research, SMCxPRO™ enables quantification of phosphorylated synuclein at serine 129 (pS129-syn), ubiquitin at serine 65 (pS65-Ub), a marker of mitophagy dysfunction and early neurodegeneration, and neurofilament, a marker of neurodegeneration. Detecting these markers in cerebrospinal fluid or brain homogenates allows tracking disease progression, even at pre-symptomatic stages.

For Alzheimer’s disease, SMCxPRO™ can measure ultra-low concentrations of tau isoforms, phosphorylated tau (pTau181, pTau217), or Aβ42. These biomarkers are critical for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease early and evaluating the therapeutic effects of amyloid- or tau-targeting treatments.
